Description

LAUNCH F18 is delighted to present a special viewing room, A Landing Field: Selected Paintings 2019-2020 by New York based artist, Noah Becker.  This unique presentation features a selection of recent paintings by the artist, highlighting Becker's distinctive, and multifaceted approach to realism.  A Landing Field: Selected Paintings 2019-2020 opens on February 18, 2021 and remains on view through March 25, 2021.

Donald Kuspit once wrote, “Becker’s style is what I would call a people’s style, that is, a style of the common culture, rather than an elite style, a style for the socially privileged.”  For over twenty years, Noah Becker’s paintings have created transformative worlds, capturing perspectives on society that don’t hide from any particular form of life.  With a uniquely sophisticated perspective, and knowledge of art history, A Landing Field: Selected Paintings 2019-2020 captures the juxtaposition of a beautiful natural world, disregarded by any sense of human appreciation.  While Becker is most noticeably a remarkable technician, he does not shy from breaking with the sometimes more painterly romanticisms. In fact, Becker balances his most recent works with an equal measure of beauty and unsightliness.

In this new series of paintings, the artist returns to a familiar subject, the landscape.  Using these natural elements as the backdrop for these new works, pieces such as Landscape Near Industrial Area, or Landscape With House collectively place at face value both the natural beauty, and man-made chaos conducted within it.   From graffiti on rocks, to industrial buildings and smoke stacks, to a simple garage on a hillside, Becker seeks to capture not merely the pleasure within the sometimes deserted landscape, but the satire as well.

As quit as these works may appear, the paintings presented in A Landing Field, break apart the traditionalism referenced within Becker’s paintings, to create a more democratic field of imagery.  Within this perspective, Becker captures a disconnection, and an odd isolation that within his subjects and characters that can be summarized as only being, a landing field.

Noah Becker is an acclaimed oil painter with exhibitions at numerous international museums and galleries. Becker is a jazz saxophonist and the founding editor of Whitehot Magazine. Noah Becker is also a contributing writer for Art in America, Interview Magazine, Canadian Art, the Huffington Post and ARTVOICES. Becker lives and works in New York City.
