Description

LAUNCH F18 is delighted to feature Erika Mahr in our online viewing room.  Mahr presents a selection of works on paper from her ongoing series, paper folds. Incorporating both drawing and sculptural elements, Erika creates a series of monochromatic works on paper that bridge 2D and 3D mediums. paper folds is on view from October 29 - January 2, 2021. A portion of the proceeds from this viewing room will go to The Ladies of Hope Ministries, an organization focused on helping disenfranchised and marginalized women transition back into society through resources and access to high-quality education, entrepreneurship, spiritual empowerment, advocacy and housing.  All of the works included in this viewing room will be priced at $250.00 to help raise money for this incredible organization.

For nearly 10 years, Erika Mahr has worked vigorously to establish a process resulting in remarkable minimalist drawings and sculptures. Though much of her work is 2 dimensional, Mahr typically features physical aspects in her paintings and works on paper. Amongst these characteristics are folds, material layering, and rough edge lines capturing the paper’s multidimensional physicality. Although the works are simply composed of paper, they capture a density and weight that suggest otherwise. Unlike most abstract minimalists, who don’t  attempt to reference outside reality, Mahr breaks tradition with swift decisiveness. The bold choices made by the artist, bridge abstract minimalism and performance art.

paper folds focuses on a selection of works on paper, highlighting the incredible delicacy, focus and precision of Erika’s Mahr artistic practice.  Within the work, there is no question that each one has found its end, and will remain in it’s completed form from that moment forward.

Erika Mahr was born on Long Island, New York. She received her MFA from Hunter College and currently lives and works in the Hudson of Valley of New York. Mahr has had solo exhibitions at LAUNCH F18, Hap Gallery, and The Susan B. Hilles Gallery. Her work has been included in recent group exhibitions at The New Hampshire Institute, the Seattle Art Fair, Theirry Goldberg Gallery, A.I.R. Gallery and Art Current, among others. Mahr received a fellowship from the New York Foundation for the Arts in 2009, was a recipient of the Joshua Tree Highlands Residency in 2016, and was nominated for the 2011, 2012 and 2013 Rema Hort Mann Foundation Visual Art Grant.
