Geometric Narratives

May 7 – 27, 2011

Press Release

Launch F18 is pleased to present Geometric Narratives, Erika Mahr’s first solo exhibition in New York, which opens on Saturday, May 7 and runs until Sunday May 29, 2011. The show is a collection of drawings and sculptures.

The exhibition originates from the artist’s fascination with geometry, space, repetition, and time, and quest for absolute perfection in drawing and sculpture. The schematic drawings present the blue print for the structural composition of each sculpture. Rendering each piece in an extremely meticulous and architectural fashion, the drawings are a two-dimensional conceptualization of each sculpture.

The sculptures present dense layers of black paper stacked upon one another, repeating and varying in sometimes the slightest of geometrical shifts. The repetition creates a narrative of time around a three-dimensional negative space. The void within these sculptures draws the viewer’s attention all the way through them. Haunting us while we stare into this abyss, however this time, the abyss doesn’t stare back.

Erika Mahr received an M.F.A. from Hunter College and her B.F.A from the University of Florida. Her recent exhibitions include New Work by Erika Mahr at The Susan B. Hilles Gallery in New Haven, CT and Drawing in the Expanded Field at Clara Hatton Gallery at Colorado State University. Erika lives and works in Queens, NY.
