Andrej Dubravsky

Aggressive Slav

October 24 – December 12, 2020

Press Release

LAUNCH F18 is pleased to present Aggressive Slav, a solo exhibition of new paintings by Andrej Dubravsky.  Aggressive Slav opens Saturday, October 24, 2020 and will remain on view through Saturday, December 12, 2020. The exhibition marks Dubravsy’s first solo exhibition in New York City.

Inspired by contemporary global issues, Dubravsky captures a remarkable breadth of social, environmental and political challenges in his new body of work. Charged with utopian and dystopian themes, Dubravsky builds a throughline around the sense that humanity is on the precipice of darkness.

As a child, Andrej frequently traveled to his grandmother’s house in the countryside of Slovakia passing by a large factory on his way. When his grandmother moved to the city, Andrej bought a house nearby to remain connected to nature.

Aggressive Slav constructs a haunting narrative that the lines of history have been drawn. From coiled caterpillars to portraits of attractive young men, the works demonstrate a juxtaposition between the destructive qualities of humanity and the delicacy of expressive freedom. From his home in the countryside, Andrej has captured a distinctive viewpoint of the ever-present social, political and environmental changes in our world.

By expanding these universally concerning ideas, Andrej crosses the boundary of painting, and enters into a new and unseen future. The works remain deeply connected to the history of mankind and capture a distinctive blueprint of our destiny. Aggressive Slav thoughtfully engages with the endurance of humanity and the careless destruction that it relentlessly casts upon the world.
