LAUNCH F18 is delighted to feature Brooklyn-based artist, Tommy Kha on its online Viewing Room. We are excited to present a selection of photographs from several ongoing bodies of work, for, At Home, I'm A Tourist. This special presentation will be available for viewing from June 23 - August 8, 2020.
At Home, I’m A Tourist captures the intimate and sophisticated perspective of Tommy Kha’s photography, building from a selection of works spanning nearly ten years. Drawing from personal themes of queerness, likeness, otherness, family and post-immigration experiences, Kha reaches deep within these experiences to find a higher plane. Comparing to a cultural journey, At Home, I’m A Tourist constructs a thematic crossroad, bringing the many complex ideas of Kha’s work all to the same intersection, and investigating these ideas through restaging his own curiosity or documented experiences.
In his own words, Kha describes his work as being about “…the self in self-portrait, the portrait in self-portrait, and the hyphen in self-portrait.” Together, these works reflect a remarkable juxtaposition between the vision of democratic ideas, and what we see and feel right in front of the artist’s lens. Amongst these photographs include self-portraits, family members, friends and even still lives and landscapes. All of which capture a deep-rooted mysticism, and tale of two strikingly different stories. Combining on sight locations and imagery taken in both Memphis, TN, the American South, as well as New York City, the diversity portrayed within these photographs captures a fragmented and complex reality.
At Home, I’m A Tourist includes over 20 works, displayed all together for the first time in this unique online presentation.
Tommy Kha received his BFA in Photograph from Memphis Collage of Art in 2011 and his MFA in Photography from Yale School of Art in 2013. Kha has recently held solo exhibitions at Blue Sky Gallery, Portland, Oregon (2018) and Baxter Street at Camera Club of New York, New York (2019). Kha has participated in group exhibitions in the United States and abroad including Kunstverein Wolfsburg, Wolfburg (2014); Deli Gallery, Queens (2016); White Box, New York (2017); Ogden Museum of Southern Art, New Orleans (2018) and the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art, Charleston (2018). Kha lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
