LAUNCH F18 is delighted to present New York based artist, Insil Jang in its online viewing room. This special presentation features a selection of recent paintings, celebrating the highly detailed and technically skilled work from the artist. A Hyphenated Identity opens on March 4, 2021 and remains online through May 4, 2021.
In my work, I embrace vulnerability and communicate the experience of self to address the fragmenting nature of race, gender, and cultural norms. I’m interested in the lack of education provided in the US regarding the history of Asian American immigration and its significance to society today.
- Insil Jang
Marked within the layers of Insil Jang’s printmaking practice is a haunting and remarkable observation of human conflict. Jang uses family photo’s, as well as appropriated images to narrow in on cultural identity of the past and the present, causing forgotten inequalities and casualties to surface. Viewing Jang’s work is to see through a lens that is deep, touching, and human.
A Hyphenated Identity focuses on five recent works by Jang, each capturing the intensity, struggle, and overlooked contributions of Asian American history. These paintings build toward a future that provides an overall richer history. Together they create a more diverse, and inclusive scope of Western art history, and break what could be a perceived state of historical generality.
Insil Jang received her BFA with an emphasis in painting and printmaking at The Art Institute of Chicago in 2016. Jang will be presenting her first solo exhibition at CICA Museum, South Korea in 2019. She has participated in several group exhibitions including Mood Disorders Association of Ontario, Toronto, Canada (2015); SUGS Gallery, Chicago (2015); FMK 5X5 Locallective, Chicago (2016); Studio Oh, Chicago (2016); NFT Gallery, Long Island City (2017); Jang currently works and lives in Brooklyn, New York.
